Proposed Rotary Community Peace Garden
Presentation completed by Darrell Nameth and Sherry Trenholm on a proposed Rotary Community Peace Garden project adjacent to Mapleton Park Rotary Lodge which was proposed the RCMWR Executive and Board in the Fall 2023.
On September 21, 2020, at 11:00 AM on the United Nations designated “International Day of Peace,” the Mayors of Dieppe, Moncton and Riverview signed a Proclamation declaring Greater Moncton to be an International City of Peace.
As of January 2021, this global designation is held by 309 other cities around the world, 5 of which are in Canada. Greater Moncton is the first community to receive this Designation in Atlantic Canada. This event is the culmination of several years’ work by Greater Moncton’s Peace Leaders Collaborative.
Rotary International has had a long and unwatering commitment to Peace and can help to coexist for Peace in our communities and world, so that everyone can live their lives free of the daily challenges of survival – safe family, safe communities, safe countries, and a safe world. Rotary estimates more than 70 million people are displaced because of conflict, violence, persecution, and human rights violations and half of those are children.
On May 15, 2024, the City of Moncton Application for Proposed Rotary Community Peace Garden located near Mapleton Rotary Lodge, Moncton NB was submitted by Sherry and Darrell on behalf of the RCMWR. The proposed design shown in the photo below was completed by Landscape Architect Tina Beers at Virdis Design Studio Ltd. as an in-kind contribution to the RCMWR. The City of Moncton has approved the application and confirmed in writing they will complete the annual maintenance after the first year including caring for the plants, ongoing weeding, and pruning and provide 2 complimentary benches for the pergola area along with picnic table.
TheRotary Community Peace Garden is estimated to cost $80,000-$40,000 and will be funded by grants and in-kind contributions as well as cash donations.
The Peace Garden size will be approximately 40 ft x 60 ft and accessible to the community. The garden will include local species plantings, indigenous native plants, bird houses and feeders, Peace Pole, bench, picnic table, and signage
The proposed Rotary Peace Garden will be constructed between June to September 2025 provided funding is scheduled to construct the garden.
Official opening on September 21, 2024, to celebrate International Day of Peace.
