Rotary Club of Moncton West & Riverview

TOMORROW'S MEETING IS AT FIVE BRIDGES RESTUARANT

121 Pine Glen Rd, Riverview

Hello Fellow Rotarians!

Hope you are enjoying the fantastic summer weather!

Last week we welcomed Roberto Palma as a new member to our club.

Roberto was born in Piura, Peru. He studied at the private school Salesians of Don Bosco and at University of Piura, member of the Opus Dei, an institution of the Catholic Church.

On January 15, 2005, he married Anissa, she was his university partner and today his life partner. They have two children; Alaina is 18 years old and a keen Psychology student at Mount Allison University and Roberto is 14 years old good middle school student and better soccer player.

Roberto is involved in the financial and insurance industry since university. He commenced his career May 24th, 2002, day of Mary, the Help of Christians. He studied economics and completed a master’s degree in insurance and risk management.

Roberto joined the Rotary Club of Moncton West and Riverview as he would like to find a rewarding way to give back to his new community and create a network with other community leaders who believe in service over self and enjoy having a good time all the while.

Let's welcome Roberto to our club and please take the time to introduce yourself to him at a future luncheon meeting and Rotary event.

"What does RLI Mean?"
Author Colin Reeves

The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) seeks to provide quality education in Rotary knowledge and leadership skills to Rotarians interested in developing their Rotary participation and to those identified by Rotary Clubs as having a potential in club leadership. These educational opportunities will teach skills that will benefit the members in their lives and in their volunteer service.

RLI provides three levels of training – each one lasting a day - in both Rotary knowledge and leadership skills. The overriding goal of the courses for club Rotarians is to create ENTHUSIASM for Rotary by opening up to them the world of Rotary outside of their own clubs and also showing them the great potential of Rotary service for the benefit of the world that can be furthered with excellent leadership in our clubs.

Rotary Ribfest Moncton Update
Author Colin Reeves

Rotary Ribfest Moncton was held June 20-23, 2024. The weather for the event this year was challenging with very hot and humid weather for Thursday through Saturday and wet weather on Sunday.

Great news is this Ribfest event was successful and raised a total of $54,088.55 for local good causes.

Due to the weather, attendance on Thursday (3150) was slightly down on previous years whilst attendance on Friday (7425) was in line with historic norms.  Saturday (11834) saw the best attendance we have ever had whilst Sunday (2200) was again low because of the weather.  Total attendance over the event was 24,609.

Whilst the number of volunteers was lower than required, we adjusted activities, including cancelling the 50:50 sales, and managed the event successfully.

Thank you to everybody who helped.

The music schedule this year was excellent with planned gaps reducing the number of acts and allowing us to pay more for headliners. The highlight of the music program was Spandixx – a local group from Riverview – who were amazing.

The minor changes to site layout (location of ATM’s, moving of dumpsters) improved the experience for everybody and people came and stayed for longer periods than last year.

Based on feedback from members, we have already made changes for next year (moving secondary entrance to trail; adjusting fence for dumpsters so emergency exit is clearly visible; recruiting volunteers for the event – not positions – then allocating them based on need and skills).

A full list of the lessons identified is on Club Runner as well as a copy of the final report.

"Important Youth Exchange Request":

Host family required for incoming exchange students who lives within the Harrison Trimble High School catchment area, which is the Moncton Centre and North area. This is an incredible experience for the host family and wonderful opportunity for the exchange students to learn and enhance their personal growth.

Please reach out to Jesse Kerpan if you are able to welcome an exchange student into life.

Forest Glen School Breakfast Program
Author John Wishart

The idea for helping Forest Glen School came from the tragic death of Rotarian, Yves Maillet in the spring of 2019. Yves was a good friend of Forest Glen Principal Craig Hutchings and had already begun to talk about a way in which Moncton West and Riverview Rotary could play a role in adopting the school – as we had with Edith Cavell School.

Yves had proposed a two-pronged approach for Rotary involvement at Forest Glen: help with their breakfast program and some type of literacy program.
The Rotary Club of Moncton West and Riverview authorized a $10,000 grant to the school to be used to develop a reading corner in Yves’ memory. The money has been to purchase seating, an area rug, mobile media towers, book carts, design and paint, a few iPads and many, many books.

The second part of Rotary involvement at the school which was also launched in 2019 is our volunteer efforts with the Forest Glen Breakfast Club.

Our involvement is to provide one volunteer every morning – Tuesday to Friday – during the school year to help Breakfast Club lead Eileen Lewis, her main helpers Nancy and Chantal, to prepare and distribute a nutritious breakfast. The items prepared can range from boxed cereal to grilled cheese sandwiches to breakfast burritos (the favorite), along with fresh fruit, cheese, yogurt, granola bars and milk.

The school has a population of around 400 and serves two low-income neighborhoods. Somedays, we will see 200 children come through for breakfast. It is a United Nations of kids from various cultures, backgrounds, religions, and languages.

For some newcomer children, seeing an adult who is not a teacher or EA helping them is a new thing (especially an adult man). But I think I can speak for the entire roster when I say it is a great way to start your day, seeing those smiles and hearing the stories of little ones as they pass through the line.

Our involvement at Forest Glen is a great example of ‘Service Above Self’. Volunteers will tell you they get more out of the experience than they contribute.

Based on the current number of volunteers, we will only call on you about once every three weeks. We are always on the lookout for more Rotary volunteers for the breakfast program. This would be a great way for new members to become involved in a service project.

If you are interested in helping the children at Forest Glen School, please reach out to John Wishart and he will add you to our roster for the 2024-2025 school year: johnwishart64@gmail.com.

The school and the kids will appreciate it!
