Welcome to June Fellow Rotarians:

In June, Rotary International observes Rotary Fellowships Month.
This month recognizes and celebrates the various Rotary Fellowships, which are independently organized groups of Rotarians, Rotarian spouses, and Rotaractors who share common interests, vocational development, and service opportunities.

Rotary Fellowships offer a unique way for Rotarians to connect, make new friends, and enhance their Rotary experience. Examples of these fellowships include those focused on golf, music, dance, hiking, boating, reading, travel, cards games, history, etc.

Rotary Fellowships help Rotarians share common interests, further vocational development, make friends, explore new service opportunities, and have fun.

Rotarian of the Week

Ian George Franklin

Profession:

Retired commercial real estate agent.

I had a very rewarding 48-year career in the real estate business in Greater Moncton.

About:
I was born in Simcoe Ontario in 1950.  My mom and dad raised a busy family of five boys. We moved to Toronto in 1958. We had a family cottage in Gravenhurst Ontario where we enjoyed a great deal of time while growing up. As a family we water and snow skied, went camping and were always very active.

Growing up, from a very early age, I had paper routes and after school jobs. After grade nine my summer job was helping to build ski chalets in the Beaver Valley.

I moved to Moncton NB in 1976 as a small general contractor and within a year found myself in the real estate business. I am married to JoAnn Thompson Franklin whom I met at Rotary in 1995. We have 4 children and 7 wonderful grandchildren.

Hobbies:
My hobbies include travelling, golfing, horseback riding, walking, skiing, building stuff, and best of all enjoying a bottle of wine with friends.

Years in Rotary:
I’ve enjoyed being a Rotarian for 39 years. I like helping people and being part of Rotary International doing good in the world.

One of my great joys has been introducing others to Rotary, where I hope they too find friendships, fun and a way to help others.

Something others may not know about me:
School was always a challenge.  I am dyslexic and couldn’t read very well until diagnosed in grade eight when I got professional help. Despite that difficulty, I found much success in my life.

The Amazing Rotary Legacy of
Rotarian Gary Cook

Rotarian Gary Cook of Moncton, NB passed away on June 20, 2019. Some of you will remember Gary for his work as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and for his involvement on various community organizations and boards. Some of you will remember him as a dedicated fellow club member, serving as Club President, and supporting RotaryMWR many efforts to fundraise in the community. I remember Gary for his commitment to the Rotary Foundation, a legacy that lives on in the work that we do today.

As a fulltime staff member for the Rotary Foundation, I have routinely returned to your district to meet with Foundation donors, Gary a constant contact since 2010. We would always meet for coffee at his office, and he would ask about our work to end Polio, the current Rotary Foundation priorities and we would discuss his vision for his own philanthropic impact through our mission.

In addition to his annual donations, in 2015 Gary formalized a Bequest gift to the Rotary Foundation, naming the Rotary Foundation Canada a beneficiary of his life insurance policy, and designating his gift to be endowed to forever support the SHARE fund for your district. He felt that the values and priorities important to him would be preserved and continued in the work of Rotary.

Now, six years after his passing, the “Gary L. Cook” named endowed fund for SHARE, one of eight endowments in District 7815, continues to provide spendable earnings each year, which are returned to the district and become the match to fuel your global and district grants. By opting for a named endowed fund, his family and fellow Rotary members, can remember and recognize his legacy in action. The next time your club is approved for a grant, remember that Gary Cook had a hand in making that a reality. What an amazing legacy to leave.

If you would like to learn more about how to leave your own legacy in Rotary, I would love to share some information with you.

Wishing you all the best.

President's Adventure

Rotary Club of Sussex Paul Harris Fellowship Dinner

On May 22, 2025, President Sherry Trenholm (incoming Rotary Assistant Governor) was invited to attend the Rotary Club of Sussex Paul Harris Fellowship Dinner at the All-Seasons Restaurant on Friday. The evening was filled with food, presentations, laughs, and entertainment.

Rotarian Marcel Gervais (incoming Rotary District 7815 Governor) and President Sherry had the pleasure of presenting Paul Harris Certificates and Pins.

The highest form of recognition a Rotary Club can bestow is the Paul Harris Fellow. It is presented to a Rotarian or a member of the community who has made an outstanding contribution to the community.

Paul Harris Recipients included Sussex Rotary Family Jane Keith, Greg Keith and- Lou McNamara. In addition, Sussex Community Members were recognized including Jim Andrew of Tim Horton's, Ralph Cunningham of EJ Cunningham Ltd. and Lorraine Pollock - retired teacher and longtime volunteer.

A certificate of appreciation will be given to law firm Lutz Parish Gerrish for their Wills Events with proceeds to The Rotary Club of Sussex, Inc.

The event was energized by a group of talented students from Sussex Regional High School Band (see photo below) who entertained at the event. The Rotary Club of Sussex secured a Rotary District Grant of $1,800 and will match the grant amount to assist with the repair of instruments for the band.
