I was born in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and moved to Canada in 2002. Soccer played a big role in my youth. I played it a lot. Volunteering has been a passion of mine since my teenage years.
I grew up in a divided Germany, with my father hailing from communist East Germany (GDR), where he fled in 1960. My mother, on the other hand, is from West Germany. This unique background gave me a firsthand perspective on the contrasts between the two sides during that era. Having grown up in a divided Germany, I can’t help but see the growing divisions in today’s world, which present significant challenges for both us and future generations. The values of democracy and equal opportunities for everyone are increasingly at risk, and it’s something we must actively protect and promote.
Years in Rotary?
This is my 17th year, past president 2022-2023.
My Hobbies
In alphabetical order: biking / cooking / enjoying / hanging out with friends and family for fun and quality time / hiking / photography / singing … plus I really enjoy watching my kids – now young adults – and my grandchildren grow up and become such wonderful people.
What is your favorite thing about being a Rotarian? -
Rotary has become a cornerstone in my life here in Canada. Through its speakers, I've gained valuable insights into the country and community. The friendships, networking, and support for meaningful causes have given me purpose and a sense of belonging. In many ways, Rotary has helped me become a better person.
Tell us something others might not know about you?
Here in Canada my wife and I built a music school in 2004, which is today the building for the Arts and Cultural Centre in Dieppe.
I studied Social Pedagogy and spent two years fulfilling my German state duty as a teacher’s aide at a special school for children and youth with mental disabilities (now likely referred to as a Special School for Mental Development).
In my twenties, I had the privilege of traveling across Australia for six months.
